The Technique Of TTA Surgery

By Serena Price

TTA Surgery is a medical operation that is carried out on sickly dogs. The dogs are sickly in that their anterior or cranial ligament is defective or worn out. This ligament or ligaments are particularly important in limiting the anterior movement of the tibia . Hence if it is defective, the dog will present with a projecting proximal tibia. This is a sign that the tibia has slided forwards on the femur.

The procedure is limited to dogs only. The exercise is done on aged dogs mostly . Younger dogs are taken through other procedures. This is because the whole task emphasizes on either replacing or tightening the worn ligament or ligaments. If the ligament is completely destroyed or torn, the veterinary replaces it with a special band. If this is not the case, he or she works to increase the strength of the ligament.

The exercise is also not done to young dogs. It takes into consideration that young dogs have strong ligaments which can be repaired through the use of medical drugs and if not other medical operations asides this one. Often, this is the last option to a worn out cranial ligament.

This is a recent procedure that has been in existence for a decade roughly . It tries to reduce chances of a dog developing knee arthritis which often comes with a damaged knee joint. However, it is only the veterinary doctor who has the mandate to pass on this procedure. This is because of the post complications that may come with it.

If the veterinary doctor has come to an agreement to carry out the procedure, he or she will follow a certain routine. The routine will follow a couple of sequential steps. The first step will be injecting the dog with a depressant. The amount of depressant they will use will depend on the extent of damage of the ligament completely damaged ligaments will require a longer medical operation that the least damaged. If it is a double operation, meaning it will be done on both legs, this will longer too.

The veterinary doctor will then inject an anesthesia on the damaged knee or knees. It will be injected at the attachment of the patella tendon. The anesthesia works to ensure that the operation is painless to the sleeping dog. He or she will then make an incision at ninety degrees to the patella tendon. Through the front, they will access the cranial ligament. Depending on the damage, the doctor will evaluate whether to replace the whole ligament or strengthening it.

A completely damaged ligament will often be replaced just as said earlier above. The replacement is a special band that is attached to the posterior part of the medial eminence to the anterior part of the femoral plateau. Strengthening or rather tightening is done to a loose ligament. The incision is later on stitched.

TTA surgery brings with it a number of medical post complications. There might be an incision problem especially if the stitching was not well done. As such, the experts have to be extremely careful.
