Why You Must Train Your Dog Properly

By Garrett McMahan

When people think about obedience, they often view this concept in a negative way. However, obedience training is an excellent way to improve the bond between a dog and his owner. Highly obedient dogs are safe and happy pets and their owners also are happier because they aren't constantly trying to correct negative behavior or dealing with the results of poor behavior. If you aren't sure about obedience training for your pet, here are some solid reasons why you should consider this training.

There are many reasons why people love having a dog. They are joyful, playful, loyal creatures that are always ready for love and excited to be near you all the time. While your dog might have the sweetest of spirits, this beloved pet also might have a few nasty habits. Does your dog bark a great deal? Does your dog jump on visitors and guests? Does your dog chew up shoes or other household items? You probably don't enjoy the chewing, barking and jumping, but good training can stop these habits and you will enjoy your pet all the more.

While you might be wary of dominating an animal, keep in mind that with proper obedience there is a huge sense of security. After all, how many of us have seen a dog running about without a leash, dashing down the road. Perhaps the owner left the door open accidentally and the pet dashed away. A well-trained dog doesn't typically escape even when a door is left open. In addition, if your dog will come when called and then follow commands such as sit and stay, you can keep them safe from harm.

It is fairly easy to train a dog to sit and stay and follow other commands in your home or in your yard, but your dog needs to be trained well enough that they will obey you in situations where there are many dogs or people around. A well-trained dog that can obey a command in many conditions is a truly safe dog. In addition, you can take an obedient dog to many more places. Your friends are more likely to accept your dog into their home and there are many other places where you can bring a well-trained animal. Dogs hate to be left behind, so your well-behaved pet will love the fact that he or she can come along with you to many places.

One of the reasons why people resist obedience training is that they don't wish to be harsh with an animal or dominate over it. Certainly, we never want to be cruel to any animal, but dogs need structure and this actually makes them happier. After all, the pack instinct still thrives within dogs and packs always have a leader. In your family, your dog looks to you as a leader and will follow your commands happily. A dog that knows what to do and what you expect is a more content animal. They love to please, and what could be more pleasing than a happy, obedient dog?

When searching for a dog obedience training system, you need to find a comprehensive approach that addresses a wide variety of issues. You need to learn how to teach your dog basic commands such as come, sit and stay, as well as how to walk properly and loosely on the leash. Tugging and pulling is not only irritating for you, it is uncomfortable and potentially harmful to your dog. In addition, you also need to be able to teach your dog to be quiet and stay down. Look for a program that allows you to train without the use of treats, as these might not always be available and they need to simply obey you without incentives. Be wary of programs that promise complete training is days or just a week, as this is simply not a realistic goal. It takes patience and time to train, and using a DVD program like The Dog's Way can provide you with the tools you need to train your dog and really maximize your relationship.
