Frequent Waste Problems Associated With Livestock

By Lianne Derocco

Hog farming is big business, and it is a fact and if you are not into this, you will not know anything about the business and how to run it. One very big concern in hog farming is the agricultural waste problem. You don't have only to store this waste properly but also treat it in very good ways and prevent the waste from ultimately harming the environment.

The waste should be stored in lagoons and waste pits, and it is important to note that hogs produce lots of waste. Toxic gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, as well as ammonia are released by the hog waste. Antibiotics that are mixed with the feeds can also be found in the waste. There are also harmful things that can be present in the waste lagoons, and these can be bacteria, heavy metals, as well as pesticides.

The gases produced can be harmful to the environment, and substances contained can also be harmful especially if the lagoon leaks and toxins seep into the soil and on to the groundwater. Making sure that the lagoons will not leak or overflow is with much importance. There should be measures taken for the lagoons to be safe, and this should be the priority of the farm owner.

There are also other problems that can occur like top crust formation in the lagoons and sludge formation at the bottom. The waste should be liquefied so that when crust or sludge is slowly forming, a quick action can be done.

A natural product should be used in this situation so that no more toxins are added into the environment, and this is very important for the hog farmer. Using a hog manure treatment that is natural should be the move, and there are already natural products for agricultural waste available in the market. A product that will eat away at the sludge and crust and liquefying these in the process is ideal and this is Agra Sphere, a mix of naturally occurring bacteria. The product spheres are biodegradable and with o need for mixing for these to work, and there are no chemicals included in the product. The whole waste pit or lagoon should be applied with the product, and the spheres are just tossed all around.

In addition, this product also will reduce the odors from your hog waste system as well as the amount of flies. Foaming, another common hog waste problem, is reduced when using Agra Sphere. This product also improves the value of the manure, making it more nutrient rich and subsequently a better quality of fertilizer.
