How To Take Care Of A Vomiting Dog

By Shari Evans

Most dogs are chewing on things that they found on the floor or yard which causes their stomach to be upset. An upset stomach is sometimes accompanied by vomiting as this is their body's reaction to get rid of an unwanted element that's trying to infiltrate their systems. Dogs vomit after eating a large meal, dirt, grass or trash. Another cause of it is an empty stomach caused by lack of appetite and irritation. Though vomiting is common on dogs it is dangerous if it happens repeatedly. This is associated with pain and it can be a very heartbreaking scene. There are many things that you can do to help them out of that situation.

What to Give your Dog?

A medication is not advisable on the first instance that your dog had vomited. A pet parent should not panic until their baby dog vomits for many times on the same hour or day. Once this had happened, you would need to take some actions immediately to get their digestion back to normal. The first thing that you have to do is to take the food bowl and withhold food intake for the next 12 to 24 hours. Placing them under a fasting period will reset the abnormal rhythm of their digestion and keep it back on track. Give water to your poor little dog but make sure that they won't bloat themselves with it.

Once fasting had ended, reintroduce food by giving your dog a bland diet. Bland diet foods are available in pet stores and you can also make one on your own. Prepare rice, chicken meat and cottage cheese and mix well. Feed the dog of small amounts of this mixture every hour to help the stomach adjust. You can provide an antacid to calm their stomach and force the dog to drink with a syringe if they tend to refuse consumption of food and water.

What to do with a Vomiting Dog?

Keep the dog indoors and let him stay in a cool, comfy and clean bedding. This will prevent him from being exposed to heat and bacteria outside which causes nausea. Do not bathe the dog while he is sick as this can only make the condition worse. Make sure that your pooch remains hydrated and provide an ice cube in case that he doesn't want to drink from the syringe. Some dogs are feeling hot and will search for cold water. Close the lid of the toilet to prevent him from drinking the cold water with bacteria.

Monitor your dog's vomit. Though it is not appealing and seeing the baby dog in pain is a punishment for every pet parent, it is important that you know what is coming out of his body. Yellow discharges are bile or acid and this substance is something that their body needs to get rid from by vomiting. If you see feces or blood on your dog's vomit, it indicates a dangerous stage that you have to call the veterinarian immediately. While you are helping your dog to recover, take some time to sit down beside him. Gently pet and talk to your dog to make him feel a little bit better.
