An Introduction To Naming German Dogs

By Heinz Kaufmann

Aside from securing a pet of quality trait, it is equally important to get them a cool and distinct name. Since German Shepherds are from Germany, you can consider giving them a German name. Although in its country of origin, German Shepherd owners do not name their pets German. They tend to give names like Cool Catch, Asterix, Lightning, or Blitz.

A list of German names can be your basis of decision in picking out the right name for your pet. Though a non-German name would do, but if you are not from the dog's country of origin, it would also be nicer to have a name from its country of origin. Names to consider are famous German personalities including Beethoven, Mozart and Elfriede.

If you are certain that your German Shepherd has the nice personality and depicts freedom then probably you can call him with the German word for an eagle which is Adler.

Naming them after their temperament is probably still the best option. Some names in Germany such as Bello and Hasso are now considered unremarkable. In the US, these two tend to be the same as clich pet names like Fido, Tabby or Spot. Among the commonly used German Shepherd names include Franz, Babe, Chaos, Charlie, Angel, Ajax and Cheese.

Another tip is to name them after literary personalities and intellectuals. A bunch of them can be considered. You can opt from Siggi, Kafka, Goethe and Freud instead of just naming them simple names such as Sigmund.

For music fans names such as Amadeusor Mozart and even names of German pop singers which include the famous Austrian Falco or the band musician Udo Lindenberg and musician Nena are some nice options. If you like German literature then why not call your male German Shepherd dog Siegfried and a good choice for the female German Shepherd is Kriemhild.

Choosing names from cartoon series is also a suggestion. This would give your pet a comparatively light name. Asterix, named after a cartoon character, would fit an intelligent pet. For a large, lazy dog fond of eating, the name Obelix would be a perfect choice.

There are also German terms that exhibit specific character like the word Adalhard that means strong and noble. Baldur, on the other hand, means bold which is suitable for a daring pet.

Hugo stands for smart while the feminine name Heidi depicts a noble character and Traute can be an affectionate name that means dear or trusted. For a very vigilant and determined dog why not choose the strong name of Reinhard which means decisive and strong. Even though the Germans themselves don't name their children with these names they still make suitable options for the German Shepherd dogs.
