Eco-friendly Farming Practices

By Lianne Derocco

It is expected that farmers always ensure that their productivity is increased but the problem here is that many also tend to practice methods that could be harmful to the environment. One of the reasons for this is that many of the easily available farm inputs contain toxic elements which could contribute to environmental degradation. It is indeed ironic that while the problem of food production is being addressed, environmental degradation is the price. This is what many people would consider as problem with large-scale agricultural farms.

There are farmers though who are already aware of the harm that they could give the environment with some practices. This is the reason why an increasing number of them have actually decided to stop making use of farm inputs that chemical-based and instead shift to a practice that is called sustainable agriculture. Crop rotation, for example, is one very effective technique in ensuring that nutrients of the soil are not depleted. Farmers have also stopped the use of chemical-based fertilizers. This has also effectively protected the soil.

Rain used to be the only water supply source of farmers. If a river or any other body of freshwater is around, farmers would have to manually bring the water to the crops. There is no doubt that such methods are ineffective. Irrigation is the solution when it comes to water requirements. Many farms are actually irrigated to make water available always. It is through this method that farmers can determine the right amount of water that should go to the plants. Un-irrigated farms naturally face problems in water supply.

Livestock farmers encounter problems that, if left unaddressed, would certainly lead to environmental issues. Agricultural waste, for one, is a serious concern that should be dealt with an amount of urgency. It is however a fact that merely reducing this is not the solution since this would just mean reducing also the production level. Of course, farmers do not want to see production go down. But the effects of agricultural waste could be controlled. This would ensure that groundwater and air quality would remain healthy for the environment.

There are certain products that have been made for the purpose of actually reducing the levels of toxicity in livestock farms. Among the most popular of these are Agra Sphere and the Lagoon Agra Sphere which are both meant for treating waste systems. Both are very powerful when it comes to controlling sludge and top-level crusting. By using these, farmers would not have to worry about poor air quality because of bad odors emitted by the farm.

The good thing about Agra Sphere and Lagoon Agra Sphere is that these do not have any negative effect on the environment. While it is true that these are very potent as solutions to top-level crusting and sludge in waste pits and lagoons, these do not contain any toxic substance that may just worsen the problems in the environment instead of reducing them. This is because both solutions are organic in character. These contain beneficial bacteria that are effective in addressing the problems of sludge and top-level crusting.
