Finding Silver Labrador Retriever Puppies For Sale

By Elnora McCullough

The controversy surrounding silver labrador retriever puppies for sale says nothing about these wonderful dog's ability to be a great pet. Labs are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and were originally bred in Britain as hunting dogs. No matter what the color, they are a great choice for family pets, as they have superb and gentle temperaments.

Having two types of recessive homozygous alleles are what gives these labs their unique coat color. Instead of being "blue" as some dogs can claim to be, they are uniquely silver. Lighter coat colors are always recessive, and when bred improperly can cause health issues. Many people are drawn to the relative beauty of this color lab.

Genetically, grey labs are chocolate labs with extremely light coats. This is due to the fact that every grey lab must have a chocolate coat color gene in order for the pigment to be present. Yellow dogs can carry the gene, which is most noticeable inside the ears and a greying of the nose and skin.

The AKC recognizes three different coat colors for Labrador retrievers, black, yellow, and chocolate. Silver dogs can effectively be registered as chocolates, since their genetics are the same and they are purebred dogs. Each color is a member of the same breed, and none are separate from one another. While all are retrievers, they are simply referred to by their coat color, such as Chocolate Labrador.

Coat dilution is present in all dog breeds, but the lab has a curious history with it, as the solid colors are typically not light at all, unless the dog is yellow or blonde. Grey color is made from light refraction and reflection, as the hairs catch them differently. On a hot summer day, the dog may appear to have a brownish-grey tint, but while inside, definitely appears to be grey in color.

The fist official mention of a grey lab was during the 1980s at a kennel in the United States. Light blonde or buff dogs were reported as early as the 1930s, but not much was thought of them because they were so rare. True grey dogs have two sets of recessive genes, one of which must be the chocolate coat coloration. Some puppies can get lighter or darker as they age depending on their genetics.

Improving upon the breed usually involves crossing with other colors as to prevent impurities in the bloodline. This enables breeders to create good-looking dogs free of health problems. Breeding simply for color can result in a smaller pool of available animals and also manifest into uncurable or debilitating diseases.

Choosing silver labrador retriever puppies for sale requires a lot of thought and research. For new owners, a puppy can be a great idea, especially one with a loving and gentle temperament like a lab. Knowing the genetic history and lineage of the dog is a good first step, as it help to determine whether or not a dog will have problems later in life. Some breeders will also be able to help new owners in raising their first puppy and be able to answer any questions they may have.
