The Features Of Silver Labradors

By Audrey McGuire

The Labrador Retriever, also referred to as the Lab or Labrador, is a breed of dog. It is one of the various types of retriever and is recognized as a gun dog. These dogs are usually black, chocolate, or pale cream or yellow in color. Silver Labradors are known for their grayish color, although their classification is controversial because there are people who do not think they are purebred Labs.

This breed of dog is known for being well-behaved and even-tempered, even in the presence of young kids and elderly people. They are playful and athletic animals. The Lab is the most popular dog breed in five regions: The United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom.

This is a preferred and favorite breed for assistance dogs in many countries. In fact, Labs are often trained to be therapy dogs, aiding those who are blind or autistic. Official agencies may use the dogs in order to perform detection and screening work for law enforcement.

The ancestors of modern Labradors originated in Newfoundland. St. Johns Water Dog was the founding breed of the Lab. When the Water Dogs were brought to England, they were renamed, after their new geographic location, the Labrador. Their name change was meant to distinguish them from the Newfoundland breed. The first written account of Labs was in 1814.

Most of these dogs have a large size. The males, on average, weigh 60 to 90 pounds. Females are slightly smaller at 50 to 70 pounds. Those that weigh more than 100 pounds are usually deemed obese. Most traits of this animals result from breeding in an effort to produce working retrievers, with the exception of color. The main categorizations of Labs: Field and Conformation. Field is used when recognizing working or American types. Conformation is the term applied to those that are typically show, English or bench.

In general, not a lot of differences exist between these dogs, especially in terms of appearance. They tend to have strong, broad tails. Their toes are webbed, a feature that is beneficial when it comes to swimming and for cold, snowy regions. The breed has a coat that is short, straight and dense. It usually sheds a couple times every year and sometimes more often depending on the climate in which it lives.

The coat is a mixture between partially dry and oily. Most of the dogs have broad heads with ears that sit close to the head, and hazel or brown colored eyes that have a black lining. Chocolate, yellow and black are the official colors for the dogs. Although not widely accepted under this classification, there are some dogs that are gray or silver and known as Silver Labradors. This term is not accepted by some dog organizations and therefore dogs of this color may be classified as chocolate instead.

Labradors are a popular breed of dog in many parts of the world. The animals are considered playful, energetic, kind and even-tempered. They make for ideal family pets, as they are well-behaved around children and the elderly. The dogs are registered in three colors: black, chocolate and yellow. There are also Silver Labradors, which have a grayish-colored coat. This color of Lab is controversial because there are people who question whether it has a purebred bloodline.
