How Window Bird Feeders Can Bring Nature Indoors

By Debra Garrison

Many people try to find ways to get closer to nature. Watching birds, squirrels, and other creatures can make you feel so close with nature. A walk through the park or a hike in the forest can show you a variety of beautiful creatures, but you don't have to go far to see nature's beauty. You can enjoy the beauty of nature right in your backyard, or from the comfort of your home. The easiest way to do this is by attaching a window bird feeder to your home.

Feeding birds has been a common pastime for many years, and for good reason. It can be such a pleasure to bring lots of different aviary creatures into your back yard. You can bring in so many different kind of fowl, depending on the type of seeds or feeders you use.

If you are looking to attract a wide variety of creatures, the best option is to use a feed containing black sunflower seeds. This is attractive to almost all seed eating birds. A tray would be the best kind to attract the largest variety.

When your goal is to attract a specific kind of bird you will need to use a specific kind of feed and a specific kind of feeder. You can also use a variety of different feeders. This will allow you to attract many different kinds of birds.

Hummingbirds enjoy eating nectar from feeders that have brightly colored openings, while finches, cardinals, and sparrows are attracted to hopper, or house, feeders. Birds that eat insects, like jays, chickadees, and woodpeckers, are attracted by suet.

If you are looking for the best experience when it comes to bird watching, a window feeder is the way to go. These feeders use suction cups, or hook onto the frames, and give you a great view. Finches, titmouse varieties, and chickadees are attracted to these.

This kind is also easier to clean since it is harder for bacteria to build up in the seed. This makes it safer for the fowl. They also prevent the issue of clear windows confusing birds and causing them to fly into them. This is a common problem when stand feeders are placed within three feet of windows.

Window feeders can be very interesting for children and pets to watch as well. It can be an educational experience to have your children watch them and research what kind of birds they are seeing. They can draw pictures of some birds they see sitting right outside their living room.

Cats are also easily entertained by them. It brings out their wild side because they feel like they are outdoors stalking prey, but the birds remain safe in their own habitat. Dogs also like watching the squirrels and birds that are attracted to tray feeders.

Both a stand feeder and a window bird feeder are good options. Make sure, though, that whatever option you choose you do not feed the birds over the winter. It may seem like it is helpful to the birds, but it is actually disruptive to their natural migration patterns and can harm them in the long run.
