When searching for Ragdoll kittens for sale Northern California residents should first contact local breeders. More and more people are learning of the endearing ways of this large, muscular cat. They are very social creatures and love the company of humans. They are not suited to homes where they will be on their own all day.

The breed developed in America. It is popular with the showing fraternity as well as being the ideal house-cat. Between fifteen and twenty pounds is the average weight which is about twice that of an alley cat. Although the cats look like Siamese/Maine Coon crosses, their ancestors are long-haired alley cats, Birmans and Persians.

They are very relaxed cats. Their docile, gentle nature endears them to all cat-lovers. When picked up, they invariably flop in the person's arms. They are tolerant of and great favorites with children. While they would seem the ideal companion for the elderly, they can cause falls because of their tendency to stay close to their owner's feet.

They have large paws and blue eyes. Their coats consist mainly of long guard hairs and they do not have such a thick undercoat as some breeds. Steel brushes and combs are the best grooming tools to keep the coat manageable. Thorough daily grooming will minimize shedding. The cats love human company. They are intelligent and don't mind learning a few tricks. In some ways their behavior is more like that of dogs than cats. They are brave and should be supervised when out-of-doors as they may fight with any stray animals they come across.

Ragdolls have dark points. There are several coat patterns. Mitted animals have white belly and paws. Bicolors have white belly and legs and an inverted 'V' on the face. There may be white patches n the back. Tabbies and tortoiseshells are found. Colors include seal, blue, red, cream, lilac and chocolate. The kittens are white when born. They begin to show coloring at around eight weeks of age. Ragdolls are slow to mature but have their full coat and color by the age of three or four.

The breed has few health issues. Despite having Persian in their background, they don't have the squashed-in nose of that breed. They are unlikely to suffer any of the breathing problems associated with such cats. Hairballs can be a problem but less so if the cat is regularly groomed. Hairball remedies can be administered and these are effective in keeping problems to a minimum. Some suffer from urinary problems.

A disease which affects cats of all breeds is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is inherited from generation to generation. The heart wall thickens. This compromises the circulatory system. The gene responsible for this disorder can now be detected by special tests. Reputable breeders will have had their breeding stock tested for HCM.

To choose a healthy kitten look for bright eyes and a clean, shiny coat. The body should be nice and plump without the kitten having a pot-belly. The nose and eyes should be free of any discharge. When looking for Ragdoll kittens for sale Northern California residents will be able to find local responsible breeders.
