Tips And Facts About Goldendoodle Dogs

By Lana Bray

Designer dogs have become increasingly popular due to the ability to select certain desired traits and end up with a dog suitable for one's needs. Poodles are often chosen for crossbreeding because of their hypoallergenic coat. One of the breeds that they can be with is the golden retriever. The result is a litter of goldendoodle dogs.

This particularly hybrid came into being in the 1990s. They were first bred for those who wanted a bigger alternative to the mixture of poodles and cocker spaniels known as a cockapoo. The name is a mix of the names of the two breeds with "golden" coming from golden retriever and the "doodle" part coming from poodle.

As with all cross-bred varieties, there is a wide range of appearances in this type of dog depending in what traits they inherit from each of their parents and the type of poodle they come from. Their size is usually in between the sizes of their parents, ranging from miniature to standard. They can be anywhere from about 13 inches in height to 24 inches and weigh from 15 to 90 pounds.

The color of the coat is quite variable as well. Some common colors are golden, white, black, gray, copper and cream. The coat may be straight like that of a golden retriever, curly like a poodle's or wavy as a mixture of the two. Some goldendoodles will shed very little if at all while others shed a bit more.

Because both poodles and golden retrievers are intelligent breeds, the mix of the two tends to be smart and trainable. Like their retriever parents, they are generally friendly, patient and often very good with children. Goldendoodles are quite sociable and it is common for them to develop strong bonds with their human companions.

Their friendly, sociable temperament make them well suited to be a family dog but also usually prevents them from being a good watchdog. Being a service, therapy or guide dog tends to suit them better. Because they are so likable and relatively hypoallergenic, they can be a good fit for a variety of people.

With proper breeding these tend to be generally healthy animals. However, like all breeds or hybrids, they are prone to certain health issues. They are particularly susceptible to hip dysplasia and eye problems. Because their floppy ears can trap moisture, ear infections can also be a problem.

Properly caring for any pet is essential to their wellbeing. These dogs require a fair amount of space and exercise to be happy and healthy. Walking them for twenty to thirty minutes daily is a good minimum guideline. They are better off not living in an apartment but they do fare better being kept indoors and close to people. Because of their sociable nature, it is easy for them to have a bout of separation anxiety if they are away from their companions for much time.

Goldendoodle dogs have a number of attractive characteristics. Intelligent, friendly, sociable dogs are easy to love. Those looking for a good companion with less of an allergic factor than others may wish to consider this hybrid.
