The Facts On Mini Goldendoodles

By Margarita Joseph

Goldendoodles is the name of a dog breed. These animals are a hybrid of the poodle and golden retriever. The name of the crossbreed, which was first coined in the early 1990s, takes the word golden from the retriever and doodle from poodle. Mini goldendoodles are just one of many variations of this breed.

The 1990s is when breeders in both North America and Australia began to cross standard poodles with golden retrievers. This was done initially as a way to make guide dogs for visually impaired individuals who also had allergies. The breed is sometimes referred to as a designer dog, a term that goes back to the late twentieth century. This was when poodles that were purebred were being mixed with other purebreds to create dogs that had hypoallergenic coats and other desirable traits of the poodle.

This animal is typically bred to be a companion. It may be good for families that have bad allergies. Sometimes these are bred to serve as therapy, guide or other assistance dogs, especially for those who have extreme allergies to most dogs.

Some people may want this type of dog because of their love for golden retrievers and desire for a low- or no-shedding dog. Not every goldendoodle has a coat that does not shed like the standard poodles. Nonetheless, these animals are known for having low amounts of shedding. There are breeders who say that these dogs are hypoallergenic, but there are no studies that prove this to be true. It typically depends on what parent the dog is more like.

Like most cross-breeds, the appearance of this dog will vary greatly. Different sizes, colors and coat types are to be expected. There are three main kinds of coats: straight, wavy and curly. Straight resembles that of a retriever and is more flat. The wavy sort is a mix of poodle curls and the straight coat of retrievers. Curly kinds take after poodle genes.

Typically the dogs are between the size of the standard retriever and poodle. They range between medium, miniature and standard. The mini ones are the result of a poodle parent that is miniature. Standard ones weigh 45 to 70 pounds on average, medium are 30 to 45 pounds, and the miniature dogs are usually only 15 to 30 pounds. Females typically stand as tall as 22 to 23 inches, while makes are a bit taller at 24 to 26 inches. Some dogs may be as tall as 28 inches.

Their coats may be gold, cream, apricot, red or white. Most have the bump on the head that is typical of retrievers. The dogs are smart and easily trainable. They tend to be affectionate to both people and other pets. In general, the animals are calm and have an easygoing nature to them. They require exercise and are quite active. Goldendoodles have good health, although both retrievers and poodles are susceptible to a condition known as hip dysplasia. Regular visits to the vet are recommended for good health.

Goldendoodles is a crossbreed made from the mix of poodle and golden retriever genes. These dogs come in many sizes and color varieties, including mini goldendoodles. The mini types are produced with a mini poodle is bred. Generally, the animals are easygoing, friendly, good for people with allergies and active.
