Toxins in Manure

By Lianne Derocco

Swine feeds usually have lots of ingredients in their feeds, and this includes not only the organic ingredients like corn, soya meal, fish meal, and others but also chemicals and antibiotics incorporated in the feeds. The feeds are not digested a hundred percent and the hog waste excreted contains this undigested food and also some of the chemicals mixed. Bacteria and toxins coming from the waste will come in contact with the soil. Phosphorous coming from the swine excrete will also pose risks to people when the manure is used as fertilizer by people and this is mixed in the soil.

The risks to people can come in the manner that the waste itself has already lots of harmful pathogens in itself. When this is inhaled, and cannot be avoided because of the exposure, people get exposure to ammonia and sulfides. The hog wastes contain the chemicals and antibiotics and other harmful substances because the feeds are bombarded with a lot of these substances also. Antibiotic resistant bacteria can come up in the wastes, and this is a good possibility, and likewise not good to humans. Swine wastes are used as fertilizers which can also contain a lot of these toxic materials.

Harmful gases taken in large doses will not be good to people, and it is a fact that hog wastes contain a lot of these toxic substances like ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfides, methane, and other harmful gases. Nausea, headache, respiratory problems, and other discomforting forms can be the result coming from these toxic chemicals and substances. These are the dangers posed by the hog wastes and thus the reason that people are finding ways for the proper waste disposal. The hog wastes are put in large lagoons.

In the lagoons and waste pits are placed the hog wastes, and water is used to spray and clean the wastes and led into the canals and ultimately into the pits. There are seepages that may happen though in the canals and the pits, and this is a big possibility. There is a big possibility that these harmful substances will mix with the groundwater, when these seepages occur, thus posing a great danger to humans. Placing liners in the lagoons to prevent seepages are done by the hog farmers, and also chemicals added.

Foam build up on the surface of the lagoons will be seen, and this is especially when the volume of hog waste is big. Toxic gases can be trapped beneath the foam, and this is toxic and very dangerous to humans, especially trapped methane. Clean up and pumping out the hog wastes can also be very difficult when sludge and crusts are building up in the lagoons. These problems need solutions, and hog farmers have these.

The solutions to their lagoon and pits with crusts and sludge and other toxic materials are with Activator Plus and AgraSphere. Breaking down of the hog waste is enhancement of natural bacteria and enzymes in the hog waste, and they do this with Activator Plus. The sludge and crust build up is solved by placing chemicals in the areas with these problems, and the chemical used here is AgraSphere. The remedial solutions of pumping out and cleaning can then be implemented when the problems on sludge and crusts are solved, and this is done by placing or throwing the chemicals directly into these problem areas.
