Bernese Mountain Dog Breeders Are Dedicated To The Breed

By Allyson Whitley

Bernese Mountain Dog breeders are a special breed themselves. There work includes gaining knowledge about the breed and diligently protecting the health and soundness of the animals they produce. When a person seeks to adopt one of these dogs as a pet or a worker or a show dog, they should take extra care to find a good breeder first.

This animal has been a recognized member of the American Kennel Club since 1937 as a member of the Working Group. It is a large dog originally from the Swiss Alps. It's original purpose was to work on farms helping the dairymen and herders of the Alps. The larger ones also were used to pull carts.

There are four types of Sennehund (Alpine dog). The Bernese Mountain Dog is one along with three other similar types of dogs.

Black, white and rust make up the colors of the coat. If showing is part of the plan, the colors need to be arranged in specific designs and markings. They are between 24 and 28 inches tall and weigh between 85 and 110 pounds when grown. Males are taller and heavier than females, typically. They also have other features that are distinctive such as a head with a flat top and a bite that is scissor like in function and appearance.

If bred according to Standard, these dogs are not aggressive. They are more often described as "docile." Although they can adapt to being indoors, they are most at home outside. They need a lot of exercise to avoid any problems with excessive barking. They are typically fine around people of all ages and other animals. The quality of breeder is important to be sure the breeding was done in accordance with the Standard set forth by the American and other Kennel clubs.

This is an intelligent breed. They can be trained easily. When training, it is important to keep in mind that they are sensitive. The human needs to be the alpha but needs to have a measure of gentility as well. They make good watchdogs even though they remain quite "puppy like" longer than other dog types.

There can be health issues that present themselves more often in this breed than others. Although cancer is a leading malady in all dogs, this breed is susceptible to certain types such as lymphocarcoma, osteocarcoma and fibrosarcoma. Musculoskeletal issues can also be a problem, primarily dysplasia of the hip and arthritis.

There have been many famous or notable Bernese Mountain Dogs. The breed was featured in the 2003 film, Good Boy! The voice of the character belonged to actor Carl Reiner. The 2012 television program, The New Normal, features one who is the pet of the characters Bryan and David. They are also represented in literature. Hola in the Martin Kihn memoir entitled Bad Dog: A Love Story is a Bernese Mountain Dog. As is Hannah in A Beach Day for Hanah and A Snow Day for Hannah by Linda Petrie Bunch.

Bernese Mountain Dog breeders have to be well educated on the animal they breed. They must know of its history and health issues as well as its temperament. They have to know what dogs are born with the proper markings to be shown and which dogs are more suited for farm work. They also need to serve as a resource for the families who adopt their dogs.
