Cavachons Are A Delightful Mix Of 2 Loveable Breeds

By Kathy Kaufman

Since their first introduction, Cavachons have become an extremely popular American popular designer breed. They are small to medium in size. These dogs were bred in 1996 for the first time. Their parents were a pure bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. Both parent lines are known for being primarily companion dogs. The puppies will have American Canine Hybrid Club registration.

The Cavashon is one of several new hybrids breeders have developed to possess certain desired traits. Like some other examples, they have been bred to possess a nonshedding trait. Being a cross breed means it has a more replenished gene pool and is a healthier product.

One side of a Cavashon is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel whose ancestors have been beloved companions of British aristocracy for generations. In this case the identification is with King Charles II with whom the dog was recorded in a number of paintings. The first recorded history of this species in the United States begins in 1956, the year it was first brought to the U. S. From England. This is an energetic, gentle, obedient and sweet natured toy breed that is compatible for either a city or a country environment.

Cavaliers have a smooth and silky coat that comes in four colors. There is the chestnut and white Blenheim shade, the black, white and tan tricolor, a solid red Ruby shade and a black and tan hue. In size it is more typical of adolescent offspring of other spaniels.

The Bichon Frise is a sturdy and small dog with a cheerful disposition. Its historical lineage is a Spanish water spaniel breed that later became a popular French royal court accompaniment during the 16th century. It has dark-eyes that have a questioning appearance and a curling tail.

The low shedding double coat makes it an appealing breed for allergy sufferers. The top coat has a rough texture and the undercoat is silky in contrast. Regular grooming is needed to ward off any matting. The shade of the coat is white, although there be some buff, apricot or cream shading in some areas of the body. The disposition of this dog is active with a mellow personality.

In height Cavachons are normally between 10 and 15 inches. In weight they are between 10 and 25 pounds. Since they are hybrids their dimensions may vary a little. They are normally sable, black, white, tan or a mix in colors. The coat is silky with loose, wavy quality. From the Bichons they have inherited a low shedding characteristic. The typical lifespan is approximately 12 years. This approximates to the life spans of the parent breeds.

If you are looking for a dog that can be left alone for long periods, this is not the dog for you. Cavachons will make affectionate pets. These family friendly dogs provide nonaggressive companionship. They mix well with other animals and pets, if introduced at a young age. Obedience training and socializing puppies are recommended highly. These bright puppies are trained easily with patience and consistent training. Well trained results will adapt to different environments. Walks and play time are needed for this energetic species. Regular grooming is a must. Common health ailments are, ear infections, hip dysplasia, skin sensitivities and heart problems. First generation or F1 crosses so far are more consistent carriers of the non shedding trait of the Bichon Frise.
