Five Tips On Dog Treats Made In USA

By Helene Norris

A number of dogs have died after eating chicken jerky manufactured in China since 2007. As a result, the United States Federal Drug Administration issued a cautionary warning for chicken jerky products in 2007 then again in 2011. This alarm has many pet owners wondering what is safe to give their pets. Do not worry. When shopping follow these five tips on dog treats made in USA.

Just as you would read the ingredient list on food your family, read the list for your dogs treats. Anything you cannot pronounce is probably not good for them to ingest. Look for high quality food. Ask your vet or visit a pet store with knowledgeable staff.

Watch out for any oil, glycerin, or proteins derived from the Jatropha plant which is used in the ingredients from China. The FDA has warned they have a possible toxic effect on animals and humans. Xylitol, used in most sugar free items that humans eat, can result in liver failure, seizures, and death in your pet. Another treat that we humans love and many owners will share with their pet is chocolate. This is very bad can will often cause kidney failure and death for your dog.

Another reason to read your labels is because some products that claim to be made in the USA are made up of ingredients that were imported. Treats produced from ingredients from the US and Canada are safer because of restrictions and testing. When a contaminated product hits the shelves, they are identified and removed quickly. So in addition to knowing what the ingredients are it is just as important to know where they came from.

Facilities in the United States constantly test ingredients as they arrive at the factory and once finished. They test for salmonella and other types of bacteria. They also handle, store, and rotate their ingredients properly along with cleanliness practices.

Raw bones are excellent for dogs. Chewing the soft tissue and tendon that is still attached, will give their teeth a good brushing and floss. It also helps reduce tarter and gum disease while stimulating pooch mentally. However, do not give them cooked bones. Once cooked, the bone becomes brittle and is likely to splinter and cause all kinds of serious internal injuries to your dog. Pork and rib bones, raw, can still splinter.

A healthy and safe treat are turkey and chicken necks and wings. It is best to grind or crush them up using a blender because giving them the small bones can cause choking. These dogie goodies contain calcium, phosphorus, and minerals essential for your pet.

Large bones from beef or bison are filled with marrow and are good for gnawing and chewing. When giving your pet a bone for the first time, stay close by and watch to make certain they do not try to swallow whole or hurt themselves in the way that only a puppy can. Second or third time you should be able to leave them alone with their treat.

Use dog treats made in USA for safe and healthy treats. Avoid chocolate, small and cooked bones, and products made with Jatropha derivatives and Xylitol. Always read the list of ingredients on the label, look for high quality, and stay away from anything added from China.
