Fun Facts About Adorable Little Mi-Ki Puppies

By Marla Mills

If you're looking for a toy breed, adaptable Mi-Ki puppies are a perfect fit for just about any home. They're calm, intelligent, sweet, and affectionate. They fit well in any home where children are old enough to play safely with this tiny little canine. They're good with other pets. They love walks but can easily be exercised with toys and games in a yard and in the home, making this little guy a suitable companion for the elderly and the handicapped. Apartment and condo residents often train this little dog to use a litter box.

This little darling loves strangers and other pets. They're not intimidated by size or noisy surroundings. Mi-Ki puppies are a great pet for those traveling in an RV. They're not yappy so it's easy to take this little dog traveling by plane, car, or train.

The Mi-Ki was developed in the 1980's by Maureen Westburg of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, she didn't keep or publish a clear record of her breeding program. It's generally believed that the parent breeds are Papillon, Japanese Chin, and Maltese. Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzu's may also be part of the genetic make-up of the Mi-Ki.

Expect to enjoy this delightful little companion for up to 16 years. This is a healthy breed with no significant genetic issues. Ask for OFA certification to avoid unexpected problems with patella luxation (knee cap slips out of position). Short muzzled dogs sometimes develop respiratory problems in their old age. Keeping the muzzle shaved and clean, and keeping their teeth clean reduces the incidence of respiratory problems.

They can weigh up to 10 pounds, but 4-7 pounds is preferred. They have a short muzzle, large round eyes, and feathered ears. Ears can be erect or drooped. The medium length plumed tail is carried over the back. This cute little canine can have a long or smooth coat of any color. Most, but not all, change color at the 1 year mark, and again at 2 years.

This relatively new breed does not yet have official recognition from the American Kennel Club. They have been recognized by the States Kennel Club since 1995. Several organizations are dedicated to development and recognition of breed status. The International Mi-Ki Registry performs DNA testing and has strict breeding standards for their members. The Mi-Ki Breeders USA is both a club and a breed registry. Other significant organizations include the Mi-Ki Club of America, the Mi-Ki Association, Continental Mi-Ki Association, and the American Mi-Ki Club.

Mi-Ki puppies have some very unique and endearing qualities. Cute little ears swing out like wings when they're excited. They climb and pounce almost like cats. They love to nap on a window ledge. Another cat-like quality, they regularly groom themselves with their tongue.

These are not designer dogs. A designer dog is the offspring of parents of 2 different breeds. Purebred Mi-Ki puppies will be the result of Mi-Ki to Mi-Ki breeding for at least 8 generations. DNA testing is available to identify a true Mi-Ki. Purebreds will be registered with a breed registry clearly stating the breed name in the title.
