Saluki is one of the oldest known breed of domesticated dog and is ancient Persian Greyhound. They may look fragile but they are well known as good hunting dogs and sight hounds. They go with a variety of colors from fawn, silver, white, red and cream. They look like Greyhounds but it is easy to tell them apart from the feathering on the tails, ears and on the back of their legs. They go by the name of Gazelle Hound and also known as the royal dog of Egypt.

Saluki came from ancient Arabian city which also possess that exact name. The Islam refer to them as divine gift from their god and is highly revered before. They are sometimes found mummified with the ancient pharaohs because of their religious association. They can hunt any fast animals like gazelles and antelopes and also some rabbits and fox.

Salukis are known for their graceful appearance that depicts agility and speed. When they reach their top speed, the hound looks like they are floating in the air. They are built to be hunters who have an amazing endurance with an active instinct to hunt. Rugged terrain and distance are not an issue to them.

Naturally, they are the quiet type and only howl when they think something is amiss or they just want your attention. They can be shy and aloof sometimes but they are also known for their gentleness and affectionate temperament. They are known to get attached to one family member.

Furthermore, they get along well with any children and known to be gentle and patient with them. If ever they need some peace and quiet time, they will find a space to settle. They get along with any canines as well. Usually, they are inactive indoors but when out on the field they are bursting with energy.

Probably one of the most difficult part of training Saluki is to make them ignore their hunting impulse. They have been breed for over thousand of years to catch and overcome fast and large prey. Since they are sight hounds, they respond well with visual training mixed with verbal commands. Harsh methods will not work with them because they are very sensitive and they respond well with calm consistency and rewards.

Saluki is a smart breed but prone to get bored with repetitive training so that is why training exercises should be kept short but frequent. They should be exercised regularly because a lack of it may make them restless when inside the house which can lead to some destructive behaviors. They may need obedience training as well to address their hunting instinct.

If you have decided to adopt one because you are attracted to some captivating Saluki pictures. You must remember great responsibility comes after an ownership of a dog. Especially for this breed who needs regular exercise.
